LATE tonight, there''ll be a real-time video link across cyberspace established from the rooftop of The Park.hotel to the Borough Hall of the Greenwich Dance Agency in London.
As Shobana Jeyasingh''s brilliant new work [h]Interland explodes across the stage exploring ideas of location and distance, Chitra the dancer from Bangalore will move in rhythm out here, her image blending seamlessly with the dancers out in London.
"The starting point for the installation is the undoing of location. The hybrid nature of my dance language has always needed dancers with complicated cultural hinterlands. And, to assemble the traditional infrastructure for choreography has always meant flying people over from different countries."
In this work, Jeyasingh will transport Chitra''s `Bangaloreness'' and make it intrinsic to the choreographic matrix. "Chitra''s participation will contribute to the interrogation of our changing perception of space, time and geographic location. The strong architectural features of the Borough Hall and its sheer size will play a role in creating new intimacies carved by distance. The special performing area will be located high on the balcony and the additional projection screen beyond will make what is physically near relatively remote, while Bangalore will loom vastly greater in scale," says Jeyasingh.
As for the selection of Greenwich, Jeyasingh says, "Greenwich with its architectural allusions to colonial grandeur as well as its position where time ticks at the meridian is a rich source of narrative and image which this work will exploit."
